自分の主張を英語で相手に分かりやすく書く、話すということになると、英語の素養に加え、分かりやすさ（lucidity）についての理解を深めることになる。その実際を論述問題で見てみよう。

Question

"In some countries, television and radio programs are carefully censored for offensive language and behavior. In other countries, there is little or no censorship. "

In your view, to what extent should government or any other group be able to censor television or radio programs? Explain, giving relevant reasons and/or examples to support your position.

自分の主張を分かりやすくする方法のひとつが、主張の前提となる主題や争点について客観的に、正確に、そして簡潔に説明することだ。

この論述問題では、検閲制度について自分の意見を述べる前に、検閲制度や検閲制度についての争点を説明することになる。

ここで主題や争点のとり間違えがあると、論述は簡単に破たんする。ぽっぽ焼きについて意見を述べる場面で、主題のぽっぽ焼きをたこ焼きと取り違えているようなものだ。いわゆる、話にならん！ということだ。説明に客観性、正確性が欠けている場合も問題だ。

Sample Answer

Censorship by government is a highly controversial issue. It sometimes leads to serious violations of freedom of speech or expression under the name of maintaining order or dealing with dysfunctional behavior. The mass media or the fourth estate, on the other hand, sometimes foments social disorder under the name of democracy or protecting human rights. Determining the extent to which government or any other group should be able to censor television or radio programs requires concerning at least three factors which make this issue controversial:

l       the fairness and healthy public-spiritedness of the censorship

l       the closed nature and arbitrariness of the mass media

l       the susceptibility or vulnerability and the information literacy of the viewers and listeners or the populace

解答例では、検閲制度や検閲制度についての争点を説明し、主張、それを支える事例、結論の部分は省略した。

伝えたいことを言葉で伝えることは簡単ではない。うっかりすれば相手を傷つける。悪意はなかったの一言では済まされないこともある。それが英語でとなると、考えただけで…ちょっと切ない。
